8 women who could flip 8 statehouses
Data for Progress is out with a new list of eight women running in state races that each have the potential to flip their respective legislative chamber. Their effort so far has pumped more than half a million dollars into local races, money that makes a real difference, and in some cases has doubled what candidates have to spend. The GOP machine is good at cashing $25 million checks from folks like Sheldon Adelson, but they don’t yet have an answer to this new small-dollar flood of money in unexpected places.
Here are the eight new ladies they’re lifting up. So far, they’ve raised this group of eight women more than $60,000. That might not sound like much, but a typical state House or Senate campaign might only spend $20,000 - $40,000 total.
I produced a video for TYT about the Democrats running across the country as rural populists, and it’s less than five minutes, unlike the typical 45 minute ones I like to send you. Here is is on Facebook, and if you hate Facebook, like most people, here it is on YouTube (which is also awful, but in different ways).
As the Jamal Khashoggi murder continues to roil Washington, one player in the saga has managed to stay remarkably low key. The United Arab Emirates used the extraordinary political capital it amassed over the last decade in Washington to present Mohammed bin Salman as a forward-looking reformer in Saudi Arabia, and successfully won the backing of the U.S. foreign establishment for the coup that made him Crown Prince. Now that he’s a global pariah, the UAE’s DC-based PR firm has dropped Saudi Arabia as a client, but the UAE itself, and its ambassador, Yousef Al Otaiba, skate by.
Tonight, he’s hosting a dinner party for Penny Pritzker, the chair of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. You can’t make this stuff up. Here’s my story on that.
Given the typical makeup of his dinner parties, there’s a reasonable chance some of the people there are reading this email right now, probably having adjourned to the basement to watch the rest of the World Series. Hope you’re enjoying yourself.
